What Is Z-Wave?
Z-Wave is a mentoring program for SGI-USA Boys and Girls (currently age 9-12) that incorporates the ideas and practices of four educators: 1) Socrates’ Method of Dialogue (5th Century B.C.), 2) Nichiren Daishonin’s humanistic philosophy of Buddhism (13th Century A.D.), 3) the Value Principles of early 20th Century educator Tsunesaboro Makiguchi, and 4) the Multiple Intelligences Theory of present Harvard Professor Howard Gardner.Whose Idea Was It To Create Z-Wave?
SGI-USA member Joe Newman founded Z-Wave in 1999. He has been a K-12 teacher of children with ADHD for 12 years. Joe currently resides in Los Angeles and works as a behavioral specialist for LAUSD. He is pursuing his masters in Organization Management at Antioch University. Z-Wave is now a part of many Boys/Girls activities in SGI-USA. What Distinguishes the Z-Wave Program From Others?
The progressive methods of Z-Wave’s educational resources span a period covering 2500 years. What they also have in common is a firm and profound belief that every child (or student) is a young adult who possesses within them a wonderfully unique gift to the world. Unlike traditional school systems, where authoritative and/or quantitative results often take precedence over individual ones, Z-Wave ideals combine to nurture the understanding of choice and responsibility within both mentor and young student as they share in the passion of a community-based endeavor. What students learn and realize on this path is the victory of attaining skills and attributes that are most natural and essential for their further individual development as human beings. As a result of choosing Z-Wave, children ultimately gain confidence in their ability to become contributing members of society. What Is The Ruling Guideline For Participation In Z-Wave?
![]()
Parents or guardians must sign a Consent & Emergency Form. Only children who attend orientation (or arrange a mini-orientation before the first session to make their choice) can participate. Children agree to participate in the endeavor of their choosing for the duration of the program (usually 6-8 sessions that culminate in an event called The Living Museum). Anyone who wants to bring a one-time guest to Z-Wave must check with the mentor at least one day before. Children who fail to behave in a respectful and compliant manner may be sent home at the discretion of Z-Wave staff. Can Anyone Be A Z-Wave Mentor?
Yes, as long as candidates meet the prerequisites for the role of Z-Wave Instructor. This information can be currently obtained from the Boys/Girls Representative in your Area. Revised 10/30/03 Web Pages From the Children's Web Design Endeavor |
